Welcome!

Welcome to our China trip journal! We will be departing Virginia Beach on July 7 and traveling to Beijing, Guilin, Chengdu, Changsha, Nanchang, and Fuzhou. This is our third trip to China and this time it's a heritage tour for Amanda and Allyson. It is our hope that they will benefit from personal exposure to the country and culture of their birth.

Peking Duck

Nancy took us to a Peking Duck restaurant not too far from our hotel. She led us through the proper way to put together the mini-burrito (for lack of a better description) that you create using the pasta-like wrapper, duck, sauce, cucumber and onions provided. Now, that in itself would not have presented much of a challenge except this restaurant put out only chopsticks for utensils. Ally is a pro with chopsticks and had no trouble. I managed to do OK with them, and even helped Jerri get going, but eventually Jerri had had enough and Nancy asked for forks and knives for her and Amanda. The food was just wonderful, even the stuff I couldn’t quite identify. Nancy did a good job of explaining everything, but apparently there are some things that don’t translate well. FYI- Pizza means something entirely different in China, as Amanda discovered when a couple of small Chinese pizzas were offered as an alternative to the side dishes she did not care for.
