Welcome!

Welcome to our China trip journal! We will be departing Virginia Beach on July 7 and traveling to Beijing, Guilin, Chengdu, Changsha, Nanchang, and Fuzhou. This is our third trip to China and this time it's a heritage tour for Amanda and Allyson. It is our hope that they will benefit from personal exposure to the country and culture of their birth.

Wednesday - Chao Yang Theatre and Traffic

Beijing acrobatic shows are legendary, and according to Nancy the one we went to is the best one in town. Both Ally and Amanda, well, all of us really, were enthralled the entire performance. They were truly incredible. Some of our favorite acts were the “lotus flower” girls who managed to do backbends and bridges so extreme they could place their feet next to their head and then stack themselves to look like a living totem pole, the two guys who walked on a huge two-ring rotating contraption while juggling, and the eight motorcyclists they managed to get into a single sphere-shaped cage.
After the show it took us nearly 90 minutes to make what should have been about a 20 minute trip back to the hotel. The traffic was unbelievable. At one point we sat without moving for at least 15 minutes. I have never in my life experienced gridlock like this. Nancy told us that cars bearing license plates that end in certain numbers, like maybe 3 and 8, are forbidden from driving on certain days. That means on any given day the traffic is 20% less than it could have been. Scary stuff when you realize that as bad as it is, it could be a lot worse.
